This tapestry records the ground condition of a rare patch of land. John Douglas Block, a plot managed by Bush Heritage as part of a conservation program, is of particular importance because it avoided clearance and hard-hooved pasture.
Across Victoria, 84% of Creekline Grassy Woodlands have been cleared, mostly during the Goldrush, with 32% of the remaining uncleared pre-1788 land on private property.
The reserve isn’t open to the general public to minimise environmental impact. We were lucky enough to secure a tour by Bush Heritage, visiting with author and historian Bill Gammage in 2022.
We designed and fabricated this tufted artwork as a vessel for sharing awareness with a wider audience unlikely to visit.
